Gerhard Richter Panorama

Gerhard Richter is widely seen as one of the most important painters at work in the world today. Born in Dresden, Germany, in 1932, he left for the West in 1961, settling in Dusseldorf, where he held his first exhibition in 1963. He has exhibited internationally for the last five decades, including retrospectives in New York, Paris and Dusseldorf. He lives and works in Cologne. Robert Crumb first began drawing record covers in 1968 when Janis Joplin, a fellow Haight Ashbury denizen, asked him to provide a cover for her album Cheap Thrills. Watercolour

Lithos 2007 2009

The workshop of Item Editions is sequestered in a back courtyard off the Rue du Montparnasse in Paris, where artists from all around the world have lithographs made on Solnhofener stones. Here, with the help of the historic presses that have printed masterworks by such artists as Picasso, Matisse and Miro, a durable artistic continues today. Filmmaker, photographer, painter and printmaker David Lynch (born 1946) was captivated by this place and its history, when he first chanced across it in 2007: "I fell in love," he declared. Since his earliest experiments with zinc plates and prints in black and red, Lynch has continued to labor away at Item Editions, recently producing large black-and-white lithographs by drawing directly onto the stone (rather than using the medium to create multiples of pre-existing drawings), experimenting with textures to draw figurative imagery out of abstract patterns, and adding captions to further elucidate their themes. The content of these lithographs clusters around themes familiar to Lynch fans: love, eroticism, dreams and death. David Lynch: Lithos collects all of Lynch's work in this genre. A conversation between Dominique Paini, former director of the French Cinematheque and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and the artist, provides further insight into Lynch's process.

Absence Of Work Marcel Broodthaers 1964 1976

In 1964, at age forty, Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976) proclaimed that his years of writing poetry, of being "good for nothing," in his words, were over, and a brief but dazzling artistic career began. Considered a founding father of institutional critique, Broodthaers created hundreds of objects, books, films, photographs and exhibitions, including a "fictive" museum of modern art that evolved from an installation in his own home to a massive exhibition of over three hundred works representing eagles. In The Absence of Work, Rachel Haidu argues that all of Broodthaers's art is defined by its relationship to language. His perception of his poetry's "failure to communicate" led him to explore in his art the noncommunicative, nontransparent uses of language. By showing us the ways in which language is instrumentalized across society - used for its efficiency despite the complexities it introduces into communication - Broodthaers shows us how we imagine language to work and points us to its hidden operations. French painter, sculptor and printmaker Paul Gauguin was born in Paris in 1848 and died in French Polynesia in 1903. But while modern art largely shunned narrative, for Gauguin it remained central. Man With A Blue Scarf: On Sitting For A Portrait By Lucien Freud

Lucian Freud, perhaps the worlds leading portrait painter, spent seven months painting a portrait of the art critic Martin Gayford. Gayford describes the process chronologically, from the day he arrived for the first sitting through to his meeting with the couple who bought the finished painting. As Freud creates a portrait of Gayford, so the art critic produces his own portrait of the notoriously private artist, recounting their wide-ranging conversations and giving a rare insight into Freuds working practice. Henri Rousseau

With 80 colour illustrations, this book commemorates the hundredth anniversary of the artist's death, placing at its core Rousseau's fascination with the frictions between a domesticated West and an untamed imaginary natural world. Like Erik Satie, whom he resembles in what Roger Shattuck memorably called "tranquil self-confidence," Rousseau straddles the Parisian avant gardes at the turn of the century, admired by Redon, Gauguin, Jarry and Degas at the outset of his career, and championed by Picasso, Apollinaire and Delaunay towards its close. Rousseau's style was derisively dubbed "Primitivism" by the press, but its lucid unity of limpid color and eerily serene definition was sophisticated in its simplicity, as his early advocates knew. Happily, Rousseau was so steeped in his vision that he could not be diverted from it--Apollinaire wrote that "Rousseau had so strong a sense of reality that when he painted a fantastic subject, he sometimes took fright and, trembling all over, "had to open the window."

Caravaggio: A Life Sacred And Profane

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio lived the darkest and most dangerous life of any of the great painters. The worlds of Milan, Rome and Naples through which Caravaggio moved and which Andrew Graham-Dixon describes brilliantly in this book, are those of cardinals and whores, prayer and violence. The patrons of the church competed to have the leading artists of the day in their households, and the artists jostled for their favour. On the streets surrounding the churches and palaces, brawls and swordfights were regular occurrences. In one such fight Caravaggio, a particularly violent man, killed Ranuccio Tomassoni, a pimp, and fled afterwards to Naples and then Malta, home to the Knights of St John, where he escaped from prison following his conviction for another vicious assault. Fleeing once more he fell victim himself to a crippling vendetta attack. Shortly afterwards, he died while returning to Rome to seek a papal pardon for his crimes. He was thirty-eight years old.

In the course of this desperate life Caravaggio created the most dramatic paintings of his age, using ordinary men and women – often prostitutes and the very poor – to model for his depictions of classic religious scenes. Andrew Graham-Dixon's exceptionally illuminating readings of Caravaggio'spictures, which are the heart of the book, show very clearly how he created their drama, immediacy and humanity, and how completely he departed from the conventions of his time.

Basquiat

The American painter and draftsman Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) ranks among the most compelling personalities of recent art history. A self-taught artist from the New York underground, he at first made a living by selling painted t-shirts and xeroxed collage postcards in downtown Manhatten. Having won some acclaim with his graffiti, Basquiat began exhibiting paintings and drawings as early as 1980. Two years later aged just 21, he become a participant in 'Documenta'. His friendships with Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Madonna are likewise legendary. Inspired by music or comic strips, Basquiat's powerful compositions combine the mundane with the magic of his own roots. His works evince the same intensity, the same energy as did his own tragically short life. In the course of his eight-year-long career, Basquiat not only succeeded in creating a wide-ranging oeuvre of his own, but he also added some new figurative and expressive elements to the Conceptual and Minimal Art repertoire.

Artist Of Exceptional Talent 1943 2007

One of the most influential contributors to the understanding of ceramics in Australia, Alan Peascod was able to balance a rigorous research program with teaching and studio work. The form, decoration and colour of Peascod's work reflected his abiding interest in Islamic design structures. His characteristic forms also showcased his experimentation with glazes, particularly in relation to colour and surface quality. He investigated a variety of surface modifications, continually evolving his work and this resulted in visual density and the discovery of new ceramic technologies.

Matisse: Radical Invention 1913-1917

The works that Henri Matisse (1869-1954) executed between late 1913 and 1917 are among his most demanding, experimental, and enigmatic. Often sharply composed, heavily reworked, and dominated by the colors black and gray, these compositions are rigorously abstracted and purged of nearly all descriptive detail. Although they have typically been treated as unrelated to one another, as aberrations within the artists oeuvre, or as singular responses to Cubism or World War I, Matisse: Radical Invention, 1913-1917 reveals the deep connections among them and their critical role in an ambitious, cohesive project that took the act of creation itself as its main focus. Frantisek Kupka

The exhibition and the catalog will show for the first time in Spain a selection of around 80 paintings and drawings by the Czech artist, all from the Centre Georges Pompidou, and documents from the collection of Pierre Brulle, a leading expert on Kupka, who was considered the first painter to explore the concept of abstract act. The splendid collection of works from the Centre Georges Pompidou, mostly donated by the artist's widow in 1963, shows very clearly the development of Kupka's art from his early Symbolist paintings to his final years. Frantisek Kupka (1871-1957) began his artistic career at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he learned an academic style. Later on, in Vienna, he began to take an interest in Symbolism and allegorical art. After moving to Paris in 1896, Kupka worked as a press and advertising illustrator while at the same time making contact with the early avant-garde movements such as Fauvism and Cubism, though maintaining his independence and his own personal language. His interest in Futurist writings meant that around 1910 his work started to become increasingly abstract, with the idea of reflecting movement and studying the effects of colour and the relationship between music and painting. This led to the publication of the book La Creation dans les arts plastiques in 1913. Despite his links to the "isms" of the period, Kupka always felt himself to be a lone experimenter.

Henry Moore

Henry Spencer Moore (1898-1986) was arguably the most influential British sculptor of the twentieth century. Brought up in Castleford in Yorkshire, Moore ended his life extremely successful, completing commissions for large-scale public sculptures in countries around the world. The scale of Moore's later success has tended to obscure the radical nature of his achievement. Rejecting the viewpoint of his teachers and influenced by works from other cultures he saw in museums, Moore championed direct carving, evolving abstract forms derived from the human body. This book re-examines his legacy, concentrating on the period from the 1920s through to the early 1960s. During the first two decades of the nineteenth century, two of the most significant theoretical works on color since Leonardo da Vinci's Trattato della Pittura were written and published in Germany: Arthur Schopenhauer's 'On Vision and Colors' and Philipp Otto Runge's 'Color Sphere'. Beyond Bloomsbury: Designs of the Omega Workshops 1913-19

With the opening of the Omega Workshops in 1913 as a 'laboratory' of radical design ideas, Roger Fry signalled a break with mainstream Edwardian culture and aesthetics. Inspired by contemporary ary in Europe, the Workshops created a range of objects for home, from rugs and linens to ceramics, furniture and clothing - all boldly coloured and patterned with dynamic abstract designs. Fry insisted that the Omega designs were produced anonymously, bearing only the Greek letter Ω in a square. For five brief years, 33 Fitzroy Square was the place to buy a 'Fauve' shawl, a 'post-impressionist' chair or a Cubist-inspired rug from an artists' collective that included Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, Percy Wyndham Lewis, Frederick Etchells, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and Winifred Gill - the remarkable young woman who ran the Workshops from the start of the First World War until 1916.

Tim Rollins And K.O.S.: A History

In August 1981, artist and activist Tim Rollins was recruited by the principal of Intermediate School 52 in the South Bronx to develop a curriculum that combined art-making with lessons in reading and writing for students classified as "at risk." On the first day of school, Rollins told his students, "Today we are going to make art, but we are also going to make history." This book unfolds that history, offering the first comprehensive catalogue of work created collaboratively by Rollins and several generations of students, now known as the "Kids of Survival."

Rollins and his students developed a way of working that combined art-making with reading literature and writing personal narratives: Rollins or a student would read aloud from classic literary texts by such authors as Shakespeare and Orwell while the rest of the class drew or wrote on the pages being read, connecting the stories to their own experiences. Often, Rollins and his students (who later named themselves "Kids of Survival" or K.O.S.) cut out book pages and laid them on a grid on canvas before undertaking their graphic interventions. This process developed into the group's signature style, which they applied to literary texts, musical scores, and other printed matter. This book and the accompanying major museum retrospective document the history of the groundbreaking practice of Tim Rollins and K.O.S., with full color images of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints. These include a caricature of Jesse Helms with an animal body drawn on the pages of Animal Farm; graffiti-like images painted in acrylic on the pages of Frankenstein; a gleaming pattern of fantastical golden horns on Kafka's Amerika; and a series of red letter A's on The Scarlet Letter.

Inside an art gallery, it is easy to forget that the paintings there are the end products of a process involving not only creative inspiration, but also plenty of physical and logistical details. It is these "cruder," more mundane aspects of a painter's daily routine that motivated Brooklyn artist Joe Fig to embark almost ten years ago on a highly unorthodox, multilayered exploration of the working life of the professional artist.

Determined to ground his research in the physical world, Fig began constructing a series of diorama-like miniature reproductions of the studios of modern art's most legendary painters, such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. A desire for firsthand references led Fig to approach contemporary artists for access to their studios. Armed with a camera and a self-made "Artist's Questionnaire," Fig began a journey through the workspaces of some of today's most exciting contemporary artists.

Born in Liuchiao Township, Tiawan, Legend Hou often signs Hou of Liuchiao Township' on his artworks. This survey brings together the artist's woodblock prints produced under this pseudonym and realised between 1992 and 2008. The prints presented as a collection of works based around their year of production, borrow heavily from folk customs and legends and are sometimes erotic and revengeful other times spiritual and playful. Art To Hear Masks Metamorphoses Of The Face

As long as humankind has needed ritual, theater and dialogue, it has fashioned and deployed masks. Modern art's relationship with masks underwent a transformation in the late nineteenth century, as Japanese and African mask craft penetrated the European consciousness; prior to this, though, they could be found in any artist's studio, where they served as models for the execution of a portrait. Even death masks (e.g. of Napoleon, Géricault, Beethoven) were collected, for their phrenological and artistic qualities. This guided audio tour elaborates the perennial strangeness of the mask, using over 40 examples deriving from various cultures and dating from between 1860 and 1930. Literary commentary on the subject, by writers such as Oscar Wilde ("Give [a man] a mask, and he will tell you the truth") and Claude Lévi-Strauss (whose The Way of Masks remains a basic text on the subject), complete the tour. Rodchenko And Popova

Alexander Rodchenko (1891-1956) and Lyubov Popova (1889-1924) were figureheads of the Russian avant-garde during its most exciting period following the Russian Revolution, a heady period when they and other artists dedicated themselves to creating a new world. As leading lights in the Constructivist movement they were responsible for an astonishing array of iconic works. For the first time male and female artist are given equal status, throwing new light on their achievements and tracking the extent of their influence, still felt today. The book concentrates on four key periods. From the Revolution in 1917 to 1921 both artists believed that abstract art had the potential to transform everyday life. The legendary 5 x 5 = 25 exhibitions, which created a community of artistic and revolutionary endeavour, are examined in depth. Between 1921 and 1924, the year of Popova's tragically early death, both artists abandoned art for art's sake and put their artistic skills at the service of the Revolution. The final section follows Rodchenko's later move into photography, the medium for which he is perhaps best remembered, and explores his involvement with film. The lives and work of these two artists, along with their extensive network of colleagues and collaborators, provide a key to the whole Constructivist project. Van Dyck In Britain

Together with Holbein, Anthony van Dyck (1599 -1641) is widely regarded as the most important name in pre-eighteenth-century British art. Born in Antwerp he was a precocious talent, rising swiftly to become the chief assistant to Peter Paul Rubens, then the chief painter of Northern Europe. His importance to British art cannot be overstated; during the turbulent years of the reign of Charles I he single-handedly reinvented portrait painting, leaving behind a legacy that would influence generations to come.

Van Dyck first came to Britain in 1620 to work for James I. Charles I recognised in van Dyck the potential to be the perfect creator of the royal image. The painter returned to London in April 1632 and was almost immediately knighted and provided with an enviable property and pension, becoming the chief painter of the court. His portraits of the royal family and courtiers, imbued with an understated authority and relaxed elegance, were an instant success. His pictures of Charles especially seemed to represent the king as both a powerful sovereign and 'nature's gentleman'. His popularity stemmed from his ease when moving in aristocratic circles, and his talent for flattering almost all subjects.

As well as van Dyck's years in England, this book explores his enduring influence on British art and culture in the centuries following his death, reflected in the way eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British sitters wanted their portraits to convey the gravitas and sophistication the earlier painter had mastered so well. Extensively illustrated and with contributions by leading authorities on seventeenth-century art, this is the most thorough examination ever published of van Dyck's British sojourn and the influence it had on the cultural life of the nation.

Out Of Now The Lifeworks Of Tehching Hsieh

In the vibrant downtown Manhattan art scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Taiwanese-American artist Tehching Hsieh made an exceptional series of artworks. Hsieh realized five separate one-year-long performances that were unprecedented in their use of physical difficulty over extreme durations and in their absolute conception of art and life as simultaneous processes. In the unfolding series of these projects Hsieh moved from a year of solitary confinement without any communication, to a year in which he punched a workers time clock in his studio on the hour every hour, to a year spent living without any shelter on the streets, to a year in which he was tied closely to the artist Linda Montano without ever touching and, lastly, to a year of total abstention from art activities and influences. In 1986 Hsieh announced that he would spend the next thirteen years making art but not showing it publicly. This final lifeworkan immense act of self-affirmation and self-erasurecame to a close at the turn of the millennium. For many Hsieh is a cult figure. The rigor and dedication of his art inspires passion, while the elusive and epic nature of his performances generates speculation and mythology. After years of near-invisibility Hsieh has now collaborated with the writer and curator Adrian Heathfield to create this meticulous and visually arresting record of the complete body of his artworks from 1978-1999. Michel Gondry's debut book is a functional memoir of his quest to put the tools of filmmaking into the hands of as many people as possible. Rothko

Mark Rothko (1903-70) is widely seen as one of the greatest painters of the 20th century and was a leading figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. In the late 1960s, he donated nine large-scale paintings to Tate on the condition that henceforward these would be shown as a unified immersive environment never to be mixed with work by other artists. The Rothko Room in its various incarnations has been one of the highlights of Tate's collection for the past thirty-five years. As is well known, the paintings in The Rothko Room formed part of a larger series known as The Seagram Murals. These were originally intended for the Four Seasons restaurant in the Seagram Building in Manhattan, a commission from which Rothko famously withdrew, irritated, according to legend, that his paintings would be lowered to the status of wallpaper for rich diners. So far the question has never been asked: if the restaurant had space for 10 paintings, why did Rothko paint 30 in the series?For the first time, the paintings from The Rothko Room are examined together with others from the series, from Kawamura Memorial Art museum, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, the Rothko Estate and other private collections. New research by an international team of experts will reveal previously unknown detail about their manufacture. They will be additionally re-contextualised by being placed alongside large-scale gouaches from the Rothko family collection and the Black on Grey paintings from the late 1960s, which continue to challenge the standard presentation of Rothko as a painter focused primarily on the effect of colour. Liberated from the straight-jacket of their legendary status, the Seagram paintings can finally be seen as works in their own right, central to a reconsideration of Rothko's late career, which in the Black on Grey paintings, his final series and the first to be created without a commission, was moving towards a tougher, more contemporary sensibility.

Francis Bacon

Along with JMW Turner, Francis Bacon (1909-92) is regarded internationally as Britain's greatest painter. Drawing on low-art sources, including photographs torn from magazines and imagery from films, coupled with a keen awareness of the rich historical tradition of painting stretching back to the renaissance, he developed a way of portraying the human body that was unique in the history of painting. Beginning his public career in 1944 with Three Studies for Figures at the Base of the Crucifixion he depicted human beings usually in isolation, at moments of extreme tension or even pain, distorted like figures from a nightmare fantasy."I would like my pictures to look as if a human being had passed between them", he once said, "like a snail, leaving a trail of the human presence and memory trace of past events as the snail leaves its slime". For many contemporary critics, Bacon's bleakly existential outlook, coupled with his flamboyant homosexuality and colourful private life, made him a controversial figure. Nevertheless his mastery of the medium of paint by this self-taught artist was recognised relatively early, and in 1962 he had a retrospective exhibition at Tate.In 1985, on the occasion of another exhibition, the then Director of Tate remarked that Bacon was surely "the greatest living painter; no artist in our century has presented the human predicament with such insight and feeling".Towards the end of the first decade of a new century it is time to re-assess the achievement of this unique artist, whose style was so personal and distinctive that his influence lay more in his commitment to art itself than in any stylistic legacy. Louise Bourgeois
