Pablo Casals made his first recordings in 1915 (a series for Columbia), it would not be until 1926 that he again released a recording (on the Victor label). In 1905 he moved to Paris where with the pianist Alfred Cortot and violinist Jacques Thibaud he established the famous trio which would last until 1934. The trio recorded Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Schumann in versions which, even today, are regarded as touchstones of greatness. He also recorded cello sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms as well as the cello concertos by Dvoøák and Elgar together with Bruch’s Kol Nidrei. Arguably his greatest recording was made by himself alone: In three periods during the years 1936, 1938 and 1939 he committed to disc the six suites by Bach featured on this disc. Besides being a master of the cello he was a conductor and created an orchestra in his native Catalonia – Orquesta Pau Casals, Barcelona – indeed Cortot conducted it when Thibaud and Casals were the soloists in the recording of the Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello and orchestra.

A double album from Naxos Historical, featuring the legendary cellist Pablo Casals (1876-1973). He developed a highly personal florid style of playing, dismissed by some as being overly romantic, but he performed and recorded extensively, raising the status of the instrument, inspiring countless musicians, and entertaining audiences worldwide. J. S. Bach: 6 Suites for Cello Solo, complete on three compact discs, is the latest recording from this internationally acclaimed artist. The set is accompanied by a 24-page booklet featuring musical commentary on each suite and 15 black and white photographs. Matt Haimovitz' 6 Suites for Cello Solo by J. S. Bach was recorded in the Plainfield Congregational Church in Plainfield, Mass. In his program note Haimovitz writes: "the 250th anniversary of Bach's death on July 28th, 2000 inspired the schedule of the recording sessions - July 10 to 13 and August 6 to 7 of that year. I found the sanctuary of Plainfield's historic hilltown church to be an ideal ambiance that both nurtured the cello's natural tone and allowed space for the sound to be sculpted." The recording was produced by Luna Pearl Woolf, who, as a composer herself, brought her insight into the compositional process to the production. Engineering was provided by Mark Thayer, whose 20 years of experience recording classical, jazz and acoustic folk music brings a warmth and intimacy to the final sound. The album was mastered by David Glasser, who has mastered 45 Grammy-nominated records and received a Grammy for mastering and restoration of the critically acclaimed "Anthology of American Folk Music."

Cellists had to relinquish their exclusive ownership of Bach's cello suites long ago. Violists and guitarists have played them; Leopold Godowsky made lush arrangements of them for the piano; and Robert Schumann went so far as to attach newly composed piano parts to the originally unaccompanied cello. This Double Fforte EMI Classics reissue presents the six Bach solo cello suites on 2 CDs and sells at mid-price. The music was recorded in 1984 by the cellist Heinrich Schiff. The suites are considered among the most profound of all classical works.

he recording is very good, the instrument well focused in the warm acoustic of the Evangelical Church of Seon, the ambience not being allowed to swamp detail with surplus reverberation. As for the performances: this is, however theoretically, dance music and Schiff, a musician whose ability is not in doubt, approaches the scores with considerable technical skill, though in places at such brisk tempos that the sense of rhythm is subsumed under the forward momentum. Schiff takes fractionally under 125 minutes to perform the 6 pieces, whilst many other musicians take 130 or even 140 minutes. However, what Schiff loses in grace he regains in drama, giving a somewhat stern though forceful account. This is considered musicianship and must be respected as the thoughts of a major solo performer one of Bach's greatest works.
